During the 2018 Spring semester in our Human-Computer Interactions course, the “BeefProtein” team was tasked to research, design, and create a prototype for a mobile application to promote health, wellness, and environmental sustainability.
Our solution was to create a gig-economy inspired mobile application that addressed the issue of the overflow of electronic and chemical waste as well as people having limited time for leisure. Our goals were to promote entrepreneurship, encourage sharing, and free up people’s time.
Initially, our target audiences included lazy college students, busy adults, and physically impaired individuals; however, after further research, we reduced our scope to target busy adults around (30~35 years old) who are willing to pay for the convenience of such service.

Lessons Learned:
This project was a great experience for me to put myself in a designer’s perspective. The Design Thinking Process, which consists of empathizing with the user, defining the problem, ideating (aka brainstorming) of potential solutions, prototyping ideas and testing them, taught me so much about the difference empathy and reiteration can make. I believe what made this project so memorable were my amazing team members who communicated openly and discussed potential benefits and drawbacks of each decision. Our different angles and unique perspectives strengthened our trust and ownership of our actions, making this one of my favorite projects I’ve worked on in my college career.
